Stress and erectile dysfunction and impotence

If you are stressed, then there is a possibility that you might develop erectile dysfunction or impotence. It has been seen that erectile dysfunction or impotence is seen more in people with stress and anxiety.

The function of penis depends more on the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS), which can be divided into Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS) and Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS). Both these nervous systems serve opposite purposes. The Sympathetic Nervous System helps in the control of alertness and sexual arousal and helps n activating blood pressure, heart rate and breathing. On the other hand, the Parasympathetic Nervous System acts opposite to the Sympathetic Nervous System. It slows down the body's reactions.

The penis gets messages from both these nervous systems. The penis starts to erect once the SNS releases norepinephrine and epinephrine. This happens when the PNS starts to modify the flow of blood in the penile region. When a person is stressed, the SNS overrides the PNS, which will slow down the input to the penis. This results in erectile dysfunction or impotence.

Erectile dysfunction or impotence due to stress can be hard to treat. The person who is stressed can go for counselling. Get some days off from all the hectic activities and travel to other places. It is better to engage in your hobbies and try new activities, which could help in getting out of stress. Spend more time with your partner without thinking of just sex. This could relieve your stress and also build up strength and confidence.
